The new award is meant to identify products and services that (1) best support and assist open water swimmers achieve their goals, (2) are innovative, unique and beneficial to open water swimmers, race directors, coaches or administrators, and (3) have made the most positive impact on the world of open water swimming during the calendar year.
The nominations are meant to recognize some of the best and innovative commercial and free offerings that open water swimmers can enjoy.
Extreme swimmers, disabled swimmers, ice swimmers, marathon swimmers, professional swimmers, administrators, coaches, pilots, and swimmers from all walks of life have used, purchased and benefited from an increasingly number of products and services introduced over the few years.
The nomination of the SwimIT reads,
"The explosive growth of open water swimming and triathlon has seen an increase in swimming tragedies in both sports. To stem the rising tide of tragedies as participation levels rise, a revolution in open water safety needs to occur. Innovations have been developed to address increasing the safety of swimmers without degrading the experience of freedom in the open water. The SwimIT, developed by Rick Senn, is a fashionably designed, reusable swim safety device that empowers the athlete to be in control of their safety while invoking a sense of calm and confidence. Lightweight and compact, the device is easy to use and enables safety personnel to quickly identify a swimmer in distress. The SwimIT, when deployed, also provides immediate relief to the distressed swimmer with lifesaving buoyancy. A means to promote responsible growth in the open water, the Swim IT is USA Triathlon-approved for competitions. For his vision, practical innovation, and empowerment of athletes with a sense of calm and confidence, the SwimIT is a worthy nominee for the 2012 WOWSA Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year."

SwimIT is a personal swim safety device approved by USA Triathlon. Invented by Rick Senn of Lo Drag, it is a personal flotation device inside a small pouch worn on an athlete's leg. It is legal to wear in USA Triathlon-sanctioned triathlons, as long as it is not deployed as a life jacket.
The SwimIT has been tested, approved and race legal by USA Triathlon (USAT) and World Triathlon Corporation (aka Ironman). Just strap SwimIT on your right leg, and go for a swim. If needed, grab the red “jerk to inflate” tab and pull. Your life jacket will automatically inflate and float to the surface next to you.
